Ultrasound scan is an important tool for detecting abnormalities in the soft parts of the neck, in planning procedures and monitoring the effectiveness of treatment. The examination may focus on salivary glands (it can detect inflammation, stones in ducts and tumours) or lymph glands of the neck (inflammations, malignant illnesses). The ultrasound examination is indispensable also in the assessment of the condition of the thyroid. The ultrasound examination of the thyroid provides important data about the size, structure and blood circulation in the thyroid, detects different growths and cysts and assesses their significance. The ultrasound examination may be the grounds for suspected thyroid disorder (especially autoimmune).
Preparation for examination
No particular preparations are necessary for the ultrasound scan of the neck and thyroid.
Patients lie on their back, the neck must be tilted back.
